Providing Better Smiles to Calgary & nearby areas of Alberta
Gingival recession, or gum recession, is what happens when the gum tissue that surrounds the teeth wears away, or pulls back, exposing more of the tooth, or the tooth’s root. Gum recession is most common in adults over the age of 40, but it may also occur as early as the teen years.
Unfortunately, gum recession can pose a number of oral problems including:
- tooth sensitivity
- teeth may also appear longer than normal
- increased risk for cavities
- if left untreated, the supporting tissue and bone structures of the teeth can be severely damaged, and may ultimately result in tooth loss
The good news is gingival recession can be fixed!
Dr. Silver is one of a few dentists in the Calgary area who is certified to practice the Pinhole Surgery Technique (PST). This technique is a procedure that doesn’t involve cutting or stitches. Instead, PST uses a needle to make small holes above affected area. A small instrument then frees the gum tissues from the bone. The gums are then moved down to a healthy position covering the exposed roots. Once the tissue has been moved to the new position collagen strips are placed under the gums to keep the tissue in place. The collagen also helps to keep the gums in place during the healing process.
Benefits of Pinhole Surgical Technique?
- Less painless usually compared to traditional grafting (CTG)
- Multiple teeth can be done at one time
- Fast recovery times
- Minimally invasive
- Increases tissue volume
Other dentists maybe would perform what is called a Connective Tissue Graft (CTG). Although this procedure is highly effective it can be quite painful and only a few teeth can be done at a time. This results in more dental visits, longer healing times, more stitches, etc.
