Cosmetic Dentistry in Calgary
CEREC—uses dental technology that can, in a single session, create dental restorations and cosmetic dental treatments that would otherwise require multiple office visits.
Calgary dentist Dr. Jennifer Silver can help you determine if CEREC is the best choice for your unique needs and aesthetic goals. Please call Southcentre Dental Clinic today at 403-278-1415 to schedule your personal consultation.
How CEREC Works
The CEREC process begins with digital imaging to create accurate, three-dimensional models of your mouth and teeth. These images are shared with the computer aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) system that will craft your custom restorations. We are then able to custom design your crown on a computer screen and check everything is ideal before we construct the crown. After the design process is complete the CEREC system will then direct the milling unit to create the crown from a solid block of porcelain material. CEREC uses durable, dental-grade porcelain to create your precision fitting restorations on the spot. Dr. Silver monitors the production of your restorations and once completed will place them during the same office visit.
When performed via traditional methods, restorative dental treatments such as dental crowns and cosmetic dentistry procedures typically entail two or more appointments spread out over a span of weeks to months in order to create the crown in a laboratory. During this time you will typically wear a temporary crown made of a plastic type material. The problem with the two visit system is that between the two appointments the temporary crown can fall off and in turn be sensitive, just all round painful and if it’s in the smile embarrassing. If it does come off you will have to go back to the dentist to have it cemented back in place and likely need another injection. Because a CEREC crown is completed in one visit you only need to be frozen the one time. Another benefit to the CEREC is that there is a reduction in the possibility of bacterial leakage into the tooth. We know that does not sound exciting but the bacterial leakage that occurs when wearing a temporary crown can lead to nerve irritation and the possible nerve damage not to mention this often makes the tooth difficult to numb at the second appointment.CEREC may be used to create:
Porcelain dental crownsPorcelain veneersPorcelain inlays and onlays Porcelain bridges
It’s important to note that CEREC treatment is most efficient when a small number of restorations are necessary. For example, patients who require a series of porcelain veneers to achieve the desired results may be best served by a traditional approach to creating and placing the veneers.
