Providing Better Smiles to Calgary & nearby areas of Alberta

Many people suffer from recurring headaches that may be mistaken for migraines or associated with other conditions such as sinus ailments, toothaches and arthritis. These headaches may actually be caused by temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ or TMD), a term that applies to dysfunctions in the connective region between your lower jaw and skull.

If you experience chronic headaches that have otherwise defied diagnosis or treatment, Calgary dentist Dr. Jennifer Silver may be able to help. Dr. Silver has helped numerous patients correct the source of TMJ and find lasting relief from its painful symptoms. Please call 403-278-1415 to schedule your TMJ assessment.

TMJ/TMD often goes undiagnosed because its accompanying symptoms are vague and can be attributed to other conditions.

TMJ headaches are generally accompanied by other symptoms which may include:

  • Jaw sticking or locking in place
  • Jaw popping or clicking
  • Discomfort throughout the jaw, face, neck, back and shoulders
  • Tingling in the hands and fingers
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Difficulty biting and chewing
  • Inability to find a consistent, comfortable resting position for your jaw

TMJ/TMD and its resulting symptoms often stem from a misaligned jaw, which can overstress the sensitive connective components between your mandible and your skull. These components include the temporomandibular joints and the trigeminal nerve, which plays a role in registering sensation throughout your face as well as in facial motor functions.

Many patients with TMJ/TMD are able to find long-term relief with custom-made oral appliances that are worn as you sleep and are designed to comfortably hold your jaw in proper alignment. Patients whose TMJ is the result of more severe jaw alignment problems or bite conditions may benefit from other forms of treatment.

Dr. Silver will discuss your treatment options with you in detail based on your unique needs. For additional information, please visit our TMJ/TMD Diagnosis page.
