Providing Better Smiles to Calgary & nearby areas of Alberta Many people think snoring is just a nuisance, but it is sometimes a sign of sleep apnea, a common and dangerous condition that often goes undiagnosed. Without treatment, sleep apnea can contribute to an increased risk for cardiovascular disease and other complications. Calgary dentist Dr. Jennifer Silver has extensive experience treating snoring and helping those with sleep apnea (and their loved ones) regain healthy sleep. If you or a family member suffers from loud, chronic snoring, please call the Southcentre Dental Clinic at 403-278-1415 to schedule your sleep apnea consultation. People with sleep apnea experience multiple instances of interrupted breathing during sleep. In order to resume breathing, your brain must partially reawaken; while you may not be aware of the breathing interruptions and waking, this process can occur hundreds of times a night. This, in turn, prevents your brain from achieving the restful, REM sleep you need. Additionally, when your brain senses the lack of oxygen, it signals your heart to work harder, pumping more blood and contributing to a heightened risk of serious health problems including:

  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Cardiac arrhythmia
  • Coronary artery disease

Sleep apnea can also lead to depression, daytime fatigue, memory problems, mood swings, morning headaches and other issues. The good news is that sleep apnea is treatable. In many cases, sleep apnea can be treated with the use of a custom-made oral appliance. These devices are similar to athletic mouthguards and are worn at night to maintain an open airway as you sleep. For additional information about the warning signs of sleep apnea, please see our Sleep Apnea Symptoms page. If you or a loved one snores regularly or experiences other symptoms, please contact the Southcentre Dental Clinic to schedule your sleep apnea assessment. Dr. Silver welcomes patients from the greater Calgary, Alberta, area.
