Providing Better Smiles to Calgary & nearby areas of Alberta
Headaches are among the costliest chronic conditions facing patients today. It’s estimated that migraines alone cost employers more than CAD 500 million per year in lost work productivity. But not all severe headaches are migraines. If you suffer from frequent debilitating headaches, please contact Calgary dentist Dr. Jennifer Silver today at 403-278-1415 to schedule an appointment.
TMJ/TMD is a serious condition that can cause migraine-like symptoms in patients who would otherwise not experience such extreme headaches. While the fundamental causes of TMJ/TMD can vary, all cases share a common root cause: misalignment with the patient’s bite.
Migraines, on the other hand, are usually the result of a circulatory or neurological problem. Highly effective prescription medications are now available to treat migraine headaches, but they only work if the root cause is truly migraine in nature. These drugs won’t help a person suffering from a TMJ/TMD-relate headache.
Treatments for TMJ/TMD headaches focus first on relieving pain and stabilizing the patient’s bite, followed by long-term solutions like custom oral orthotics, braces, or coronoplasty and equilibration. The goal with long-term care is to keep you free of headaches without the need for long-term medication.
