Providing Better Smiles to Calgary & nearby areas of Alberta

Tooth discoloration can be an embarrassing thing, keeping you from wanting to show your smile. The most important thing to do is to identify the cause(s) leading to discoloration, in order to help facilitate treatment and aid in preventing future stains. If you have stained teeth and would like to uncover the cause and see what treatment options are available, contact Southcentre Dental Clinic at (403) 278-1415 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Jennifer Silver.

The first step in determining cause is to have your teeth examined to help establish whether the stains are extrinsic or intrinsic, meaning are they surface stains or part of the tooth’s own structure. Some common causes of stained teeth are:

  • Foods and beverages you consume – Foods such as berries and tomato based sauces may cause staining. Beverages such as coffee, tea, and wine are also known to stain teeth. If you consume foods and beverages that cause discoloration it’s important to rinse your mouth out after.
  • Medication – Certain antibiotics, such as tetracycline, as well other medication can cause deep stains on the teeth, often gray in appearance.
  • Aging – As we age the teeth begin to yellow. This is because as you get older your dental enamel begins to yellow over time.

Treatment for discoloration can be as simple as dietary and lifestyle changes, or may require polishing, tooth whitening, bleaching, veneers, or crowns.

If you are unhappy with the appearance of your teeth because they are stained or discolored and want to see what options are available to you, contact our Calgary Alberta dental practice at (403) 278-1415 and schedule your appointment today!
