What is Botox treatment?

Botox is a minimally invasive cosmetic and therapeutic treatment that offers numerous benefits. It has been typically used for cosmetic reasons, but lately, many doctors and dentists have incorporated this therapy for multiple medical treatments. The injections contain a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, which is injected into specific muscles in the face or other body parts to achieve different results.

Technically speaking, Botox prevents the transmission of motor signals to the injected muscles, creating temporary paralysis. When applied in certain facial regions, it relaxes the muscle group responsible for facial expressions, softening wrinkles, frows and facial lines. It is also used to relieve the muscle tension that causes chronic pain in people who suffer from migraines and joint disorders and for many periodontal procedures.

What happens during the Botox Treatment Procedure?

After Dr Silver determines that you are suitable for this type of treatment, she injects the toxin into the muscle group that produces the wrinkles or triggers the pain. The number of injections varies according to the extension of the affected area. Most patients don’t even need anaesthesia (the needles are extremely fine), and a typical session doesn’t last more than 15 to 20 minutes.

One of the most significant advantages of Botox treatment is that, unlike plastic surgeries, there is no downtime. You can go back to work or return home with no inconveniences. We just ask you to stay in the clinic for a few minutes until we are 100% sure you are safe and sound.

Are there any post-op indications? Not many; we only advise you to avoid strong physical activities for a few days and not to rub the treated area to prevent the migration of the toxin.

BENEFITS

REFRESHENS YOUR APPEARANCE

This is the most widely-known benefit. Botox achieves excellent results in softening wrinkles and furrows and even prevents the development of new facial lines. You will get back your youthful appearance in only one session!

HELPS PATIENTS WITH JOINT DISORDERS

This therapy is also indicated for those patients who suffer from joint-related pain. Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) cause tension in the muscle group that participates in the mandibular movements. By relaxing these muscles, Botox also helps ease the pain and stop bruxism.

LIFTS DROOPY EYEBROWS

By injecting Botox in specific facial muscles, Dr Silver can elevate the height of your eyebrows, making you look happier and more rested. However, patients need to know that, although injections work perfectly for most patients, some might still need a surgical procedure to get the results they are looking for.

Why choose a Dentist for your Botox injections?

Dentists are perhaps one of the most appropriate professionals to administer this type of treatment. They have a comprehensive knowledge of facial anatomy and perfectly understand muscular activity, so they can deliver the exact results you are expecting. In addition, no other healthcare professional provides as many injections in their daily routine: dentists have the skill to make injections as pain-free and comfortable as possible.

Is Botox safe?

Dentists and doctors have been using Botox for almost two decades. The FDA approved this toxin for cosmetic treatments in 2002, but doctors started to administer this injection nearly ten years earlier to treat conditions like strabismus and eyelid spasms. So yes, Botox injections have been around long enough to be considered a safe procedure.

However, patients need to know that some side effects have been associated with the injection of this toxin, like headaches, facial pain, temporary eyelid droop, and muscle weakness (uncommon). Still, the risk of these inconveniences is considerably low when the treatment is administered by a skilful professional.

FAQs

The effect of Botox starts wearing off three or four months after the injection. Therefore, it is recommended to repeat the treatment once every three to four months. However, it is common that, after prolonged treatment, muscles train themselves to contract less. This can result in less frequent applications, extending the time between injections up to 6 months.

It is impossible to estimate the treatment cost without an examination. The price varies according to multiple factors, but the most important is the extension of the area to treat. This will determine how many injections you will need and how much chair time the procedure will take.

As mentioned before, Botox injections require no downtime. After resting a few minutes and applying an ice pack in the treated area, you will be ready to go back to the office or drive back home. You might experience mild discomfort and some redness at the injection site, but it will quickly disappear.

The FDA approves this therapy for people 18 years and older. Still, most professionals advise patients that want to refresh their appearance to wait until they are at least 25. Facial lines begin to appear at this age, so there’s no advantage in starting the treatment before – not even for prevention.
